Chapter I
General Provisions
Norm 1
Object
This regulation aims to define the objectives, standards and criteria for the development of Cridem – National Competition for Works of Plastic Expression of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, for 2024.
Norm 2
Concept
1. CRIDEM is a national competition for works of plastic expression by persons with intellectual disabilities, with a free theme, open exclusively to people who are being supported by organizations with responses in the area of intellectual disability.
2. This edition of the Competition is promoted by APPACDM of Porto, with the support of the Fundação Manuel António da Mota, Fundação Montepio and the Municipality of Porto, and these entities will be called promoting entities, and will have the designation CRIDEM 2024 – 18th National Competition for Works of Plastic Expression of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities.
3. The 18th edition of CRIDEM also has the support of Humanitas – Federação Portuguesa para a Deficiência Mental, Delta Cafés and the High Patronage of His Excellency The President of the Portuguese Republic.
Norm 3
CRIDEM Objectives
CRIDEM aims to:
1. Give visibility and promote public recognition of the artistic skills of people with intellectual disabilities;
2. Raise society's awareness of the importance of art as a form of expression of the individuality of each one and as a vehicle that promotes the full inclusion of citizens with intellectual disabilities;
3. Value the skills of people with intellectual disabilities and promote their self-esteem;
4. Propagate and promote the dissemination of good practices of institutions;
5. Value the professionals who accompany the activities of plastic expression in the context of the institutions;
6. Deepen the relations between social economy organizations in the field of artistic expression in the area of disability.
Norm 4
CRIDEM Organization
1. Organization and curatorship of CRIDEM 2024:
a) The dynamization, dissemination, communication, marketing, elaboration and maintenance of the site, reception of works and contact with the participating institutions is the responsibility of APPACDM do Porto.
b) The design, organization and supervision of Cridem's exhibitions will be in charge of the curator, appointed for this purpose, Rui Mateus;
c) The opening of works, presentation to the jury, assembly and disassembly of exhibitions, preparation of the opening of the exhibition and respective delivery of prizes, preparation of medals and catalogues, custody of the works and return of the works – will be the responsibility of the company hired for this purpose – Letras Encantadas, Lda.
d) The production of images (photographs and video) during the exhibitions will be the responsibility of the company Letras Encantadas, Lda.
e) The receipt of the works will be made at the headquarters of APPACDM do Porto, which will be responsible for its safekeeping until delivery to the company hired for this purpose;
f) The promotion and sale of the works will be the responsibility of APPACDM do Porto.
Chapter II
Selection Process
Norm 5
Participation
1. Non-profit institutions based in Portugal that support or provide services to people with disabilities or intellectual disabilities, over the age of 18, may apply for CRIDEM 2024.
2. Works may be submitted to the competition in the following categories:
a. Painting (works up to 0.70 m × 1.00 m)
b. Drawing (works up to 0.60 m × 0.70 m)
c. Sculpture: ceramic, metal or other materials, including mosaic and tile (works up to a maximum of 0.50 m³ – half a cubic meter)
d. Tapestry (works up to 1.50 m × 2.00 m)
e. Other plastic expressions (for large works, see the definition in No. 7 of this norm).
3. Each institution may present up to a maximum of 3 works in the total of the defined categories.
4. The organization reserves the right to propose to the institution the thematic reclassification when, in its view, it is incorrectly assigned, thus limiting the possibility that it may be awarded.
5. The works can be individual or collective.
6. The works must be sent only with the indication of the artistic name of the author/authors, designation of the institution of origin, and this data must be placed in a place that is not directly visible on the work itself.
7. For large works (referred to in No. 2, point e. of this standard), photographs of the work must be sent – instead of the work – accompanied by the same identifying elements referred to in the previous paragraph; if they are accepted, the institutions will be contacted for the pieces to be part of the inaugural exhibition.
8. All works to be presented must be accompanied by the Identification Form – one for each work. (failure to complete the form(s) in full and correctly may result in the exclusion of the works presented).
9. For greater uniformity in presentation, drawing and painting works that use paper support must be sent without a frame, and the organization is responsible for preparing them for exhibition;
10. The promoters reserve the right to request additional information related to the institutions and the authors of the works in the competition.
Norm 6
Selection Criteria
The following selection criteria will be considered:
• Artistic quality of the work;
• Creativity and innovation;
• Use of recycled and/or environmentally friendly materials.
Norm 7
Jury
1. The jury will consist of five members – the curator, one representing APPACDM do Porto, who will preside over the jury, one representing Fundação Manuel António da Mota, one representing Fundação Montepio and one representing the Municipality of Porto.
2. The promoters will disclose the results through their communication media.
3. There will be no appeal against the decisions of the Jury.
Norm 8
Prizes, Attribution Ceremony and Public Exhibitions
1. The following cash prizes will be awarded:
a. 1st prize of the competition / Fundação Manuel António da Mota Prize, in the amount of 3,000 euros, to be awarded to the institution with which the first-placed is associated;
b. 2nd prize of the competition / Fundação Montepio Prize, in the amount of 2,000 euros, to be awarded to the institution with which the second-placed is associated;
c. 3rd prize of the competition / Porto Municipality Prize, in the amount of 1,000 euros, to be awarded to the institution with which the third-placed is associated.
2. Aires Moreira Prize worth 1,000 euros – special jury prize to be awarded to the institution that presents the best set of works to the competition.
3. Category prizes – 3 prizes will be awarded (1st, 2nd and 3rd place, which cannot repeat the 3 winners of the absolute prizes of the contest) per artistic area (referred to in paragraph 2 of Norm 5), to whose authors trophies of distinction will be awarded.
4. Honorable Mentions – works deserving of Honorable Mention will be awarded a special diploma.
5. All participants of CRIDEM 2024 will be assigned a certificate of participation.
6. The Awards will be delivered in a formal session, on a date to be defined, in the presence of several guests and the competitors and their organizations, preceding the opening ceremony of CRIDEM 2024;
7. The costs of travel and accommodation of the winning participants to the award ceremony are the responsibility of the participating entities;
8. A selection of works will participate in the traveling circuit, CRIDEM GALLERY 2024, touring several exhibitions throughout the territory of Continental Portugal, until the end of 2025;
9. All works present at the contest will be included in the catalog of this edition.
Norm 9
Sending the works to the competition and their return
1. The works must be sent – or delivered by hand – between April 1 and 30, 2024 to the headquarters of APPACDM do Porto at Travessa da Costibela, 85, Aldoar, 4100-186 PORTO;
2. The works must be packed carefully, and the organization is not responsible for damages related to poor packaging or any other causes unrelated to itself;
3. The pieces will be returned in a phased manner, according to their eventual choice to integrate the itinerant circuit CRIDEM GALLERY 2024;
4. The choice is at the discretion of the exhibition curator and the institutions commit to take on this choice and the deadlines for returning the works that result from it;
5. The pieces not selected for CRIDEM GALLERY 2024 will be returned within 30 days from the disassembly of the inaugural exhibition of CRIDEM 2024, with the costs of the return being taken care of by the contracted company (as in the 2nd return phase);
6. The pieces selected for CRIDEM GALLERY 2024 will be returned within 30 days from the closing date of the last exhibition of this tour, until the end of 2025;
7. Pieces that, with the permission of the institutions, explicitly defined in the Identification Form, are for sale and have been acquired are excluded from these returns. For this purpose, the value attributed to each must also be entered in the aforementioned form;
8. The pieces sold will be delivered to their buyers within 30 days after the closing of the exhibitions (either the inaugural or the last one of CRIDEM GALLERY 2024, depending on whether they are pieces not selected or selected for this tour, respectively);
9. The funds corresponding to these acquisitions will be transferred directly to the institutions, which must confirm their receipt to the email cridem@appacdmporto.com, since only after this communication will the pieces be delivered to the acquirer.
Chapter III
Final Provisions
Norm 10
Entry into Force
1. This Regulation shall enter into force on February 1, 2024;
2. The mere presentation of works to the competition implies the tacit acceptance of the rules of this regulation.
Norm 11
Gap Integration
Any gaps and omissions in this regulation will be remedied by resolution of APPACDM do Porto, which may consult the promoters for this purpose.
Norm 12
Revision and Revocation
This regulation has been seen and approved by the promoters and may be reviewed and revoked at any time by the Board of APPACDM do Porto, with their opinion.
